Raj was called to the Bar in 1983 and worked within the CPS until recommencing private practice in August 2009. In 2005 he was appointed Director of Legal Practice & Quality Assurance for CPS London, and therefore has unrivalled experience to bring to his private cases. As the head of the CPS's European and International Division, Raj dealt with a number of high profile issues such as extradition, human trafficking and terrorism. Throughout his career, Raj has dealt with some of the most serious and sensitive cases in the criminal calendar.

His work to date has included drafting the Society of Black Lawyers’ submissions and giving evidence to the Inquiry into the Death of Stephen Lawrence, with all of his recommendations being accepted in the final Report. Other Inquiry work has included giving evidence to the Commission for Racial Equality Inquiry into the Prisons Service and the Peach Report on Judicial Appointments. He also sits as an adjudicator for the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

He regularly contributes to publications and has written articles in the Lawyer, The Law Society Gazette,The Independent and has a regular column in the Asian Voice.

His abilities have been acknowledged on a number of occasions. In 2007 he was awarded the Lloyds TSB Southern Jewel Award for Public Service and in 2008 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law by London Metropolitan University.
