Riel joined 18 Red Lion Court from 2 Hare Court in June 2010. A fuller profile will appear in due course.
A criminal practitioner who both prosecutes and defends in cases of all levels of complexity and seriousness. She has been instructed alone, as a led junior, and increasingly as a leading junior in most London courts but most frequently at the Central Criminal Court. She specialises in serious crime, and has extensive experience in murder cases, including both high profile and historic prosecutions. She also undertakes regulatory work and is frequently instructed by the General Medical Council and General Social Care Council.
Riel has experience of the complete calendar of criminal offences, including those involving violence, drugs, firearms, sexual offences, the organisation of prostitution, POCA offences and the ancillary proceedings that flow from them. She recently appeared for the prosecution in the case of Paul Bint, the serial con man and confidence trickster, who posed as a top criminal barrister impersonating Kier Starmer QC, the Director of Public Prosecutions and also both Orlando Pownall QC and Jonathan Rees of 2 Hare Court.
In recent years Riel has developed considerable experience in complex and high profile Terrorism cases, which by their very nature include a wide range of sensitive issues, including difficult questions of disclosure, and cross jurisdictional issues.
She has frequently appeared in the Court of Appeal, having advised and appeared on behalf of the Attorney General on a number of occasions in respect of Unduly Lenient Sentence Appeals. Her written work in respect of a multi-handed appeal against conviction and sentence has been singled out for praise by Hooper LJ.
She has advised for the defence in a number of private cases, including in respect of the law surrounding private prosecutions, and also advises on a pro bono basis, most recently for a human rights organisation.
She is a grade 4 prosecutor, and is on the CPS list of approved advocates for Rape cases.
