R v Ibrahim and others (appeal)
23.04.2008
[2008] EWCA Crim 880; [2008] 4 All E.R. 208; [2008] 2 Cr. App. R. 23
Court: Court of Appeal - Criminal Division
Keywords: Admissibility; Police interviews; Safety interviews; Terrorism; Interviews conducted without legal advice
This case involved appeal against conviction and sentence by the four failed London suicide bombers of 21 July 2005. Under the provisions of the Terrorism Act 2000, the defendants' initial interviews had been carried out without legal advice. At trial the admissibility of these so-called "safety" interviews was unsuccessfully challenged by defendants. Each defendant had been warned and had understood that their comments might be used against them at trial.

Their long sentences (life, with a minimum of 40 years' imprisonment to be served) were justified considering the extreme nature of the offences.
